After a huge crowd emerged at the Maha Kumbh on the occasion of Somwati Amavasya, the Uttarakhand government is in talks with the religious leaders to shorten Kumbh on the raise of ccovid19 infection.

Kumbh Mela IG Sanjay Gunjyal stated they are continuously appealing to people to follow covid-19 protocol behaviours but it is difficult to do social distancing at ghats. A stampede like situation may occur if they try to enforce social distancing.

The Kumbh Mela used to begin in January but given the Covid situation, the state government approved to start it in April. The Mela held between April 1 to 30 this year has asserted the centre’s SOP but the current situation has reduced the duration but no information of it being curtailed.

A single-day record spike is about 1953 new positive covid-19 cases.
