Afghan government releases 900 Taliban militants. It is for the first time such a large number of prisoners were freed. As per the contract between the US and the Taliban, the Afghan government required to free 5000 Taliban prisoners in exchange of 1000 Afghan security officials.

The swap is meant to be a key trust-building step ahead of peace talks, however, negotiations between the two have been on and off since early March. Afghan also urged the Taliban to continue a three-day ceasefire that completed on Tuesday night.
